Teresa Giannico

Teresa Giannico (Bari, 1985) lives and works in Milan.
After graduating in figurative arts from the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari, she
specialised in drawing and painting, while developing a keen interest in
scenography and the theatre, and little by little becoming more familiar with
photography. in 2012, she moved to Milan and frequented the Master in
Photography and Visual Design at the NABA (Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti)
and began working as an assistant for the photographers Paolo Ventura and Toni Thorimbert. After taking part in Plat(t)form 2015 at the Fotomuseum in Winterthur (Switzerland), she was called to explore her work on the occasion of the Fotopub Festival in Novo Mesto (Slovenia) and at Circulation(s) (Paris, 2016). In 2015 she was shortlisted for the Premio Francesco Fabbri with her series of works titled Lay Out, and in 2016 she displayed the series as part of the group show Sulla Nuova Fotografia Italiana (Viasaterna, Milan). In 2018 she was selected among the photographers of Futures, a photography platform curated by Camera, and her work was featured at Unseen (Amsterdam) and at Camera (Turin). She was an artist in residence for the project ‘Casino Palermo’ (Viasaterna, Palermo, June- July 2018), and she then took part in the group show of the same name in the Milanese space of the gallery (October-December 2018) followed by her first solo show Kaleidos in Viasaterna (January 2019), Artverona (Verona, 2019) and the group exhibitions Erosioni at Fundaciò Enric Miralles (Bercelona, 2019), Sguardo Lucido at Fotohof (Salzburg, 2019), at Photo Israel (Tel Aviv, 2019), and the group exhibition of Premio Cairo (Milan, 2019).
Teresa Giannico’s research instills a project of investigation, questioning space,
sculpture and photography. The artist works with a process of reconstruction of
reality as a result of a series of consecutive steps, which clear stratification and
accumulation of images from internet, then mounted on cardboards and
arranged in a diorama that it is re-photographed and re-printed in small and
large sizes.
The composition of the result follows only the necessity of juxstaposition of
different entities, creating distinct layers of reading and perception. It is an
illusionistic machine that tells the story of its elements along with their dialogue,
plastic interaction and precarious equilibrium.
The settings are result of an imagined landscape, nurtured by little traces and
memory of entities constituting their body; that through the means of drawings
become new suspended reality.
